I am primarily a sociolinguist. My main research focus is on processes of language variation and change in North American English, especially Baltimore English, with the goal of understanding the influence of social and structural factors on these processes. I am also interested in language users' knowledge and awareness of linguistic features, and in the social meanings of these features, especially as manifested in different types of linguistic performance.
Besides sociolinguistics, I have also worked in theoretical morphosyntax, with a focus on the processes by which abstract syntactic representations are converted into speech sounds or signs.
